Game two of the season saw Hatfield United pick up their first 3 points.
What makes it better is that it was against their bogey team. After gifting them goals last season that gave them a total of 5 points in 3 games to beat them to the title, they have finally overcome the psychological battle today and won the game both on the pitch and the mental aspect.
Henners opened up the scoring as Hatfield United dominated the first half. Leighton did ignite their engine and looked to gain some momentum to find an equaliser, and they did. After some hesitation, Hatfield United allowed a cross to find a free man at the back; a shot was saved by Archie, but there was no follow-up to allow a tap-in. Poor defending as a team from Hatfield United, and like last season, they gifted them a goal and allowed them into the game.
Half time 1-1
Although Hatfield United looked on top, they were in for an all-out dogfight, and the boys were starting to look tired and frustrated. Leighton’s striker burst through to go one on one with Archie and unfortunately was brought down in the box for a pen. Archie stood firm and saved it and fired his team’s morale to overload. Few changes to add energy up top, and substitute Freddie became a hero with 2 instant goals to watch the home side then fall apart mentally. They stood their ground and saw the game out with Leighton arguing amongst themselves, while Hatfield United looked comfortable till the end of the match.
3-1 final score.
Although there were some fantastic performances today, the hero Freddie has to take today’s Herts Plumbing MOTM Award.
